Hurricanes cause catastrophic amounts of property damage in coastal cities worldwide. In the United States, hurricane season is fast approaching and begins June 1st.

Many agencies provide valuable information on preparing to protect our lives and property from these destructive storms. The following tips are from The Department of Homeland Security at

  •  Trim or remove damaged trees and limbs before hurricane season to help keep you and your property safe. Hurricane winds can cause trees and branches to fall.
  • Secure loose rain gutters and downspouts and clear any clogged areas or debris to prevent water damage to your property.
  • Reduce property damage by retrofitting to secure and reinforce the roof, windows and doors, including the garage doors.
Purchase a portable generator or install a generator for use during power outages. Remember to keep generators and other alternate power/heat sources outside, at least 20 feet away from windows and doors and protected from moisture; and NEVER try to power the house wiring by plugging a generator into a wall outlet.
  •  Consider building a FEMA safe room or ICC 500 storm shelter designed for protection from high-winds and in locations above flooding levels.
The Insurance Information Institutes defines a catastrophic event as the following: “An event is designated a catastrophe by the insurance industry when claims are expected to reach a certain dollar threshold, currently set at $25 million, and more than a certain number of policy holders and insurance companies are affected.”

Hurricanes and tropical storms made up 40.4% of total catastrophe losses between 1993 and 2012. Following these kinds of catastrophic events, insurance companies hire temporary, independent ‘cat’ adjusters to facilitate the mass amount of insurance claims.
